Viola Patricia Amherd, a Swiss politician born on June 7, 1962, has been elected as the President of the Swiss Confederation for the year 2024. This marks a significant milestone as Amherd becomes the first woman to hold this position in over a decade.
Amherd, a member of the Swiss People's Party, has served as a member of the Swiss Federal Council since 2019 and currently holds the position of the Head of the Federal Department of Defence, Civil Protection and Sport (DDPS). Her election to the presidency was confirmed on December 13, 2023.
